THE FALL OF THE WALL

Twenty Years Ago Today the Berlin Wall Fell.

The Brandenburg Gate inside No Man's Land. See the wall going around it. Today there is only a line of bricks on the ground marking the position of the wall here. The empty space immediately behind the gate in this picture is now home to the US Embassy in Berlin. Further behind that is now home to a massive memorial for the Jews who perished in WWII.

This is one of my shots from our summer Berlin Trip. One of the last pieces of the wall that remains standing today.

Another shot from Berlin Trip.

The Berlin Wall collapse and the end of the cold war is all they are covering on CNN International today.

Happy Birthday Christopher

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHRIS !

Its Christopher's 19th Birthday. Happy Birthday Chris.

Rothenburg Germany - October 2008

Rothenburg Germany

We spent several days in Rothenburg Germany in October. Rothenberg is in Bavaria, southeast of Frankfurt and northwest of Munich. It is an ancient city with a walled city center. It was largely left untouched by the war. A bombing mission 15 days before the end of the war missed much of the city due to thick cloud cover. The city dates back to the 1300's a was a major trade route north/south and east/west.

It was well worht the drive.

Here is a shot of Andrew standing in town. Notice the tower and gate. This is inside of the walls and was another protective watch tower. There are many throughout the city.

This is the wall around the city. You can walk along the wall for about half of it.

Joan and Andrew on the wall. In older times the citizens were required to walk the wall 2 nights a month on lookout.

We went up one of the towers at the wall. Its quite a hike up. This was one view from above. Look at the height of the wall from way up here. This was one of the main gates leading into town. I think there are 6 of them in all.

A shot of Andrew on the wall. This is near another of the gates.

Looking from the wall down on a covered bridge.

Joan and Andrew on the wall.

This is the tower we climbed. Its totally rustic inside.

A view of the wall from Street Level.

Rob and Joan on the wall.

Looking down the path.
One of the 6 gates into the city from outside. This was at the far end of town. The River Tauber is below us.
The same gate at night.

I did a nite time tour with the Night Watchman. The town used Night Watchmen until the 1920's. They patrolled inside the city. Here is Andrew with the guide.

The night watchman. he has a DVD for sale...Only 15 euro...A bargain....Produced in Sarasota Florida....I didn't buy one.

Shots From Town
This is a famous house at "The Fork In The Road". The road drops way down on the right.
Joan and Andrew. THis was actually at a Castle outside of town in Culmburg.

In the town square drinking hot cider.

A building in Town Square at night. The windows above the clock open on the hour. The one on the right shows a man drinking a stein of beer.

This house has a sign dating it in 1474. It is all original. I think thats the oldest house I've seen in a town center in Europe.

An old church in the cente rof town.
The courtyard of the church.

A stained glass window in another more famous church...St. Jacobs.

St. Jacobs is famous because of this Alter. Its called the Blood Alter because there is a Relic of Christ's Blood in the glass orb in the center of the cross.

A painting of Jesus in St. Jacobs.

Town Square. This is the Rathaus...or City Hall.

One of the many gates inside of the wall. Look at the door to get inside.

Another shot of town.

This is another shot of one of the main towers at the wall.

A great picture of Andrew

An equally great one of Joan
And then there is Me.

Our beer, wine, schnaaps and juice booty from Rothenburg.
